Overture uses a powerful window management system that allows you to choose the positioning of the various elements that make up the user interface. A list of all windows can be found under the View Menu, you can also use the Reset windows option on this menu to restore the initial window configuration.

You can change the state of a window by using the docking control bar:

Window States

Windows in Overture can have one of the following states:

Hidden

The window is not visible. You can restore the window from the View Menu.

Auto-hide

The window is not visible, but a placeholder is attached to the side of the main window where the window would be docked. You can restore the window by clicking the placeholder. The Auto Hide icon (Auto hide button) is displayed in the docking control bar.

In the screenshot below, the Data Browser window has been set to auto-hide. The window placeholder has been highlighted:

Docked

A docked window is positioned flush against one edge of the parent. This is the default mode for many of Overture's windows. The docking control bar displays the Pinned icon (The pin window button).

In the screenshot below, the Start Page has been docked on the right-hand-side of the main window:

Floating

The window floats above the parent window and can be moved outside the main application. Undocked windows can be re-docked from the docking control bar or by double-clicking the window's title.

Closed

The window is not visible. All core Overture windows can be reopened from the View Menu; project-specific windows such as result tables, process pages and similar cannot be reopened from the View menu once closed. These must be reopened from their respective source components.

Moving Docked Windows

You can move docked and floating windows by dragging the window's title bar. When you start to move a docked or floating window, the docking indicators will be displayed. In the screenshot below, the docking indicators that appear when the Start Page window is dragged are shown:

The docking indicators

As you drag the window, a blue focus rectangle will be displayed. If you drag the window over one of the docking indicators, the focus rectangle snaps to where the window will be placed if you release the drag.

Dropping the window on the docking indicators at the outside edge of the main window will cause the window to be placed flush against the corresponding edge.

Docking indicators will also appear when you drag a window over the centre of an existing docked window. You can use these indicators to align the moving window to the top, bottom, left or right of a target window.

If you select the center docking indicator, this will cause the moving window to be grouped with the target window in the same position. A set of tabs will be created for each window in the group. You can ungroup a window from the group by dragging the tab rather than the window title bar.

You can restore the initial layout of windows by clicking on the Reset windows option of the View Menu.
