The Map Layer Window is used to control which map layers are visible on the map. The layers shown in this window can be edited from the Mapping > Map Layers menu, or from the Maps subsection of the Start page.

Screen shot of the Layers window

The icons on this window operate on the selected layer. The order of the layers in the view represents the order of the layers on the map; layers at the top of the list are drawn on top of layers lower down. In the screen shot above, the site markers layer will be drawn on top of everything else.

Entries in light-grey are not currently visible on the map. Entries in black are visible.

The button bar in this window provides the following functions:

  • The layer properties button This displays the properties for the selected layer in the Properties Window.
  • The legend button This displays the legend for the selected layer. See Map Legends for more information.
  • The show on map button This adjusts the map view so that you can see the entire layer on the map.
  • The toggle visibility button This toggles the visibility of the layer. If the layer is to be shown, any data source for the layer will be refreshed if necessary (e.g., it represents signal strength or similar). You can also toggle visibility by double-clicking the layer in the list.
  • The move layer up button This moves the layer upwards in the hierarchy.
  • The move layer down button This moves the layer downwards in the hierarchy.
  • The transparency adjustment control This adjusts the layer's transparency.

Double-clicking a layer, or clicking the The toggle visibility button icon will force any underlying data source to be refreshed if it needs it. A map layer that is waiting for underlying data to become available is marked with a flashing icon.
