Overture supports many popular formats for point data. Point data is stored in the Points data source collection.

The quickest way to load and visualize point data is by adding a point map and pointing it at one of the following component types.

Points from File Provider

All standard GIS formats (such as ArcView, MapInfo, and KML) are supported by the "Points from File" provider, which you can add by selecting "Points from File" from the Add selector:

Points Collection Editor

The new Points from File provider has a property called Filename. Edit this property by pressing the ... (ellipsis) button and browsing to the point file you wish to import:

Add Point Map

If the file loads successfully, the Status property will say "Valid", but if it does not, the status field will contain an error message.

Spreadsheet Point Provider

The other type of point data that Overture supports is from a text file, where the data is organized in columns and delimitted by commas or tabs. To import data like this, select "Spreadsheet Point Provider" from the Add selector:

Add Point Map

Select the filename of the spreadsheet file you want to import, then select the columns that indicate the point locations.

Visualization

Once the file is loaded successfully, click OK to accept the new point provider. This will return you to the properties for the point map itself. Pressing the Show On Map button will make the point map visible and move the map pane to show the complete dataset:

Add Point Map

Once the point data is loaded, the data can be formatted by changing the map properties. Press the Help button (next to the Show on Map button) for more information.

Organization

Overture maintains a separation between the data (in this case the point file) and the visualization component (in this case a point map) to allow the user to add multiple map views for a single point data source.

Point data sources can also be transformed into other data types for visualization and network planning purposes.
