This tutorial shows you how to import
Region data
from Google Earth. It assumes that you have
installed Google Earth on the same computer as Overture. A zipped copy of the KML
region file used in this tutorial is available for downloaded
here.
Suppose you have used Google Earth to sketch out an Area of Interest (AOI) for Ann
Arbor as below:
To import this data into Overture, we first need to save it as a KML file. You can
do this by right-clicking on the polygon entry under the "Temporary Places" folder
in Google Earth:
A save file dialog will be displayed to allow you to choose the filename. Make sure
that you also set the file type to be "*.kml", as below:
A zipped copy of this file is available
here.
We can now import this data into Overture. The quickest way to do this is to add
a Region Map. From the
Start Page
select Maps:
Then press the Add button:
This will give a list of different map types to add. Select
Region Map from the list:
This adds a new Region Map to the map collection and then shows you its properties:
Select the Region Provider property, and
then click Edit List. This will launch the
Region
data source collection editor:
Click the Add button, and select "Regions from
File" from the pull-down list. The properties of the new region data source are
shown in the property grid on the right-hand side:
Click on the Name property and set it to "AOI", then
click on the File Name property and enter
the filename of the region file (or you can click the
... (ellipsis) button to browse for it). Click
OK to return to the properties of the Region Map.
Set the Selected Column property of the Region
Map to "Name" and then click the Back button
to return to the Maps sub page.
Click the Refresh button to display the region
on the map.
